The peony is also known as hyakkaō or fukkisō in Japanese and has been beloved by many for a long time as a lucky flower.

I myself started growing them in my garden a few years ago and it has become one of my most commonly-drawn flowers.

By layering drawings of the bud, the flowers and the falling petals overtop my sketch and on one canvas, I express the life of a flower.

When drawing, I cherished the way the atmosphere is instantly transformed when the gorgeous peony flowers bloom at the height of spring.
