Using an old Buddhist statue I saw during fieldwork in my hometown of Yamagata as the main motif, I painted a scene in which the sky is filled with a huge, mysterious pattern of light. In the sky, there are words taken from the Psalms of the Old Testament, which are a series of fragments asking for God's salvation. The title "polar light" is a verbal expression for the Northern Lights, and by depicting the aurora as a human figure in the painting, I tried to depict the human side of salvation as a man-made system.
