The original is based on the sea in Niigata Prefecture, where he currently resides.
It may be an expression of my feelings that I cut out the waves and use colors that at first glance do not seem to be recognizable.
The sea is a familiar presence in my mind, and I have used it as a motif in my paintings on several occasions. When I was a child, my parents took me to school, and when I was in high school, I went to school while looking at the ocean. What I was looking at was the ocean on the Pacific Ocean side. The impression of the Pacific Ocean is different from that of the Sea of Japan, which is the motif of this project, because the movement of the Pacific Ocean is gentle.
Yamagata Prefecture, where I lived for a long time, also has an ocean, and it is the Sea of Japan, but I live inland and the ocean is far away, so I did not have many opportunities to see it. In contrast, the sea is close to where I live now. It is as close as if I had returned to my parents' house.
However, the expression of the surface of the water, the things on the beach, the smells, and the sounds are different from what I remember. I had an impression that my senses were clouded. And yet, of course, it was the sea. There was a strange sensation of both unfamiliar and nostalgic feelings.
In order to express this mixed sensation, many layers overlap, and I feel that the technique of grinding out, in which each layer is visible and hidden, was a good match for me.
Perhaps if I live in the current area for a long time, my senses will change, and the colors of my paintings may change as well. Perhaps there is still a sense of discomfort in living in this area. The color tones may be a manifestation of such anxiety and confusion.
